SUPERTUBOS, Peniche/Portugal (Freitag, den 9.Oktober 2012) – Julian Wilson (AUS), 23, gewinnt am Freitag den ASP World Championship Tour (WCT) Stop in Portugal. Im Finale schlug der Australier den Brasilianer Gabriel Medina, 18, mit 16.26 zu 15.37 Punkten.
Eine Neuauflage des Finales vom Quiksilver Pro France 2011, nur hatte diesmal der Australier Julian Wilson am Ende das Glück für sich.
“I’m overwhelmed,” meinte Wilson. “I lost to Gabriel (Medina) on the buzzer last year in France and to beat him back again on the buzzer, I don’t even know how to describe the feeling. He was trying to hold onto the lead in the end there, he pretty much did what I did in the Final last year in France. He was too busy worrying about me, and that wave came in the dying moments and that was the scorer. I don’t know what to say, I’m just so happy.”
Mit einem guten dritten Platz konnte sich Joel Parkinson wieder ein Stück im Kampf um die Weltmeisterschaft gegenüber Kelly Slater absetzen. Mit 52.700 Punkten hat er nun einen Abstand von 4.900 Punkten zum zweitplatzierten Kelly Slater.
