Surfing in Imsouane

Fishing village with charm and the longest wave in Morocco - a paradise for all beginners and longboarders!

The charming fishing village and surfer's paradise of Imsouane is located 80 km north of Taghazout and 100 km south of the old port city of Essaouira and is one of the most popular surf spots in Morocco. Situated on the edge of the High Atlas Mountains, the town used to be characterized exclusively by fishing until the first surfers discovered the waves for themselves. Thanks to the sheltered Imsouane Bay and the Cathedral surf spot, which is open to the Atlantic, Imsouane offers the perfect wave for beginners and pros alike and is one of the best in the whole of Morocco!

Imsouane is famous for the long right-hand wave in Imsouane Bay. On good days, the wave runs from the lighthouse at the fishing port up to five hundred meters through the long bay. The sandy bottom and the usually moderate wave size make this point break one of the most popular surf spots for beginners and longboarders. It is also the longest surfable wave in Morocco!

If the swell is too small, you can switch to the Cathedral surf spot facing the open Atlantic. Here the waves have more pressure and are usually always a bit bigger than in the sheltered bay. There are several peaks to choose from here - also for shortboarders. Alternatively, you can find other first-class surf spots along the entire stretch of coast south to Taghazout and north to Essaouira - these can be reached quickly and easily by rental car, bus or cab via the well-developed N1 coastal road!

With the first surfers, tourism is developing in Imsouane alongside fishing. The accommodation is all located directly in the town and you can choose between surf camps, hostels, hotels, apartments and vacation apartments. The surf spots are usually right next to the accommodation!

During breaks, you can watch the fishermen at work and watch the waves in one of the many restaurants right by the harbor. The "Catch of the Day" grilled on charcoal with a typical vegetable tagine or a tomato salad is unbeatably tasty and inexpensive. Or you can take part in the fish auction yourself and fry the delicacies in your own pan. Later in the evening you can round off the day in one of the numerous bars or attend one of the surf camp's many parties!

A trip to the port city of Essaouira, which was founded by the Portuguese, a visit to the numerous argan oil cooperatives or a hike through the beautiful hinterland of Imsouane are all suitable excursions!
